Liberals and Bloc Vote Against Poilievre’s Plan To Axe The Sales Tax On New Homes
December 10, 2024
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Ottawa, ON – Today, the Liberals and the Bloc decided to vote against a Common Sense Conservative motion that would’ve axed the sales tax on new homes under $1 million. This would’ve saved Canadians up to $50,000 on the price of a new home, and would’ve sparked the construction of 30,000 more houses and apartments every year.
As the CEO of the CMHC said today in a House of Commons’ Committee, this “certainly would inspire more home building if we can reduce the cost of home building.” Despite this, Justin Trudeau and the Bloc will continue to allow gatekeepers to add hundreds of thousands of dollars onto the cost of a new home.
In British Columbia and Ontario, government charges account for more than 30 percent and 35 percent of the cost of a new home, respectively. The Trudeau Government takes the biggest share, with 39 percent of the total taxes in Ontario going to politicians in Ottawa. GST, alone, adds $50,000 in costs to a $1 million home.
Justin Trudeau and the Bloc have shown once and for all that they are not interested in solving Canada’s housing hell. After nine years of Trudeau, housing costs have doubled, with housing inflation rising faster than any other G7 country. Before Justin Trudeau became Prime Minister, it took only 39 percent of the median pre-tax household income to cover home ownership costs. Now, it takes nearly 60 percent.
Today’s vote makes clear that only Common Sense Conservatives will end Trudeau’s housing crisis and bring homes Canadians can afford.
